Erica Fernandez Zamora, a proud former Oxnard student, grew up in Michoacán, Mexico, and came to Oxnard at age ten, where she thrived as a migrant student. A Stanford graduate with degrees in Urban Studies, Iberian and Latin American Cultures, and Education Policy, she has
dedicated her career to advancing equity and community empowerment. In 2009, she received the Jane Goodall Global Leadership Award for this work. In her keynote, Erica will honor Dr. Jane Goodall’s legacy of hope- championing a more environmentally sustainable and equitable world- and inspire us to recognize how our actions truly matter.
Afternoon Keynote by Dave Hanley:
Food, Water and Air Is Not Enough
Back by popular demand, Dave Hanley will inspire science educators to walk in the footsteps of our furry, scaled, and feathered friends and see the world for the fragile and rare place it is. Farmers, Zookeepers, Horticulturalists, Nature Volunteers, and others understand that nothing lives by food, water, and air alone. From managing an exotic bird business and a job in health care, to working as a high school biology teacher for 27 years - maintaining over 150 animals (and we’re not talking about the students!) - Dave has had an adventurous career. Now retired, he volunteers in an organic regenerative farming program and for the JOHP Nature Center/ Peacock House. “At the age of 73, I've cared for all nature of living things. I've lived a Dr. Dolittle Life; but as land has been developed, my ‘friends’ have become increasingly scarce.” Dave will share his message that to save our World, we need a world of Volunteers.
